Health & Safety Policy — Gardening Walthamstow
Policy statement
Gardening Walthamstow is committed to providing a safe working environment for employees, clients and the public during all gardening and grounds maintenance activities. This health and safety policy outlines responsibilities, procedures and safe systems of work for our Walthamstow gardening teams and contractors. The aim is to prevent accidents, minimise risks and ensure that every job is planned and carried out with safety as a primary consideration. All staff must familiarise themselves with the policy and follow it at all times.
We recognise that garden care and landscaping include a range of hazards from machinery, chemicals and manual handling to working at height and in confined spaces. Our approach is practical: assess, control, monitor and review. The policy applies to routine gardening services in Walthamstow, seasonal work and one-off maintenance visits. Managers will ensure staff are trained and equipment is suitable, maintained and stored correctly.
Responsibilities are clearly defined. Senior management provide leadership and resources; supervisors ensure procedures are followed on site; and every operative is expected to work safely and report hazards. Contractors engaged for specialised tasks must demonstrate equivalent safety standards before starting work. We promote a culture where safety concerns are raised without delay.
Risk assessment and control
Before starting any job the site is assessed for hazards. A documented risk assessment will consider traffic routes, underground services, footpaths, public access and weather conditions. Control measures include safe work zones, appropriate signage, traffic management and use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). For many routine tasks the standard controls include high-visibility clothing, gloves, eye protection and hearing protection where required.
Safe systems and equipment
All machinery and tools used by our Walthamstow garden care teams are regularly inspected, serviced and operated only by trained personnel. Battery-powered alternatives are used where feasible to reduce noise and emissions. Equipment that is unsuitable or faulty is removed from service and logged for repair. We insist on correct guarding, secure storage of sharp tools and safe refuelling procedures for petrol-powered equipment.
Manual handling risks are reduced through team lifts, mechanical aids and by planning tasks to limit repetitive strain. Ladders are used only where low-risk access is required and where alternatives are impractical; harnesses and fall-prevention are used for higher works. Any task involving hazardous substances, including pesticides and fertilizers, follows COSHH-style controls: labelled containers, safe dilution procedures and clear disposal practices.
Training, communication and welfare
Training is central to this policy. All operatives receive induction training covering company procedures, hazard awareness and emergency response. Ongoing training includes safe use of equipment, first aid, manual handling and specific skills for tree work or pesticide application. Supervisors carry out toolbox talks to reinforce safe working and ensure teams understand day-to-day risks.
We maintain clear lines of communication between office staff, site supervisors and operatives. Work instructions are provided in accessible language and important safety information is available on site, including emergency contacts and procedures. Welfare provisions for longer jobs include rest breaks, access to drinking water and shaded areas during hot weather.
Incident reporting and emergency procedures are straightforward: all accidents, near misses and unsafe conditions must be reported immediately. First aid trained staff are present on larger sites and first aid kits are maintained. Incidents are investigated to identify root causes and update procedures. We regularly review our performance and update the policy to reflect lessons learned and changes in best practice.
Monitoring, review and continuous improvement
Performance is monitored through regular site audits, equipment checks and reviews of training records. Management will undertake periodic inspections and consult with staff to identify improvements. This policy is reviewed at least annually or when significant changes to operations occur. Non-conformance with safety requirements will result in corrective action, retraining or disciplinary measures as appropriate.
